These 2 novels are brilliantly written at once amusing then piognant sad bleak and realistic..Cal deals with a young man living in Ulster Northern Ireland..who is embroiled but desperate to escape from, republican violence and haunted by the memory of a murder..Cal is a good lad trapped in unenviable circumstances and you really feel for him as he struggles against his self hatred...

...........................................................
Lamb is the story of Michael Lamb who absconds from a religious aprroved school on the bleak west coast of Northern Ireland, with a troubled young boy, who suffers from Epilepsy..Together they form an uneasy but trusting alliance..until Lamb realises that their situation is hopeless his solution to this is shocking and the last few pages have a sense of finality which many might find unsettling..Altogether MacClaverty has pulled off what most writers find extremely difficult, the crafting of a brillant 1st and equally compelling 2nd novel
